Soldiers’ Balances undisposed of

When a soldier died without any instructions on how to distribute their estate then the financial balance of the estate was advertised in the London Gazette in line with “The Regimental Debts Act 1893”.

The effects register will usually indicate the fact that the monies had not been disposed of by showing that no payments had been been made to his estate and by listing the number of the list on which the balance was advertised.

Monies which remained unclaimed would eventually be gifted to the Royal Patriotic Fund for charitable use.
